Residents by distance to rail

How close Madrid lives to rail.

Each resident is assigned the distance to their nearest station. This can vary by station point choice and rail mode.

How stations compare

Catchments overlap. Hinterlands do not.

A catchment counts everyone within a radius of one station; a hinterland assigns each resident to their single nearest station.

Method & limitations

An estimate with explicit boundaries.

Limitations

Population. Official INE population totals for each census section on 1 January 2025 were distributed across the residential buildings within that section according to their estimated number of dwellings. Dwelling counts were reconstructed from Catastro data; where a cadastral property contained multiple residential building components, dwellings were distributed between them according to their relative size. The procedure preserves the official INE population total for every census section.

Regional coverage. For each population component, we calculate the distance to its nearest eligible rail station entrance or platform. Coverage at each radius is the population whose nearest station lies within that distance, ensuring each resident is counted only once.

  1. This estimates residents, not actual occupied addresses.
  2. Dwelling occupancy is not uniform; the model assumes equal average occupancy within a census section.
  3. Distances are geometric, not walking distances; barriers and street layouts are not represented.
  4. INE population, Catastro and station information represent different source dates.
  5. Area selections exclude residents immediately outside their boundary, while eligible nearby stations remain available.
